We will begin our interview process for the upcoming season in January. We plan to conduct interviews with qualified applicants on selected days in January, February and March. RIVERBOAT DISCOVERY POSITIONS AVAILABLE:
Guide, Deckhand, Reservationist, Accounting Clerk, Retail Sales Associate, Dining Hall Associate, Kitchen Assistant, Donut Maker and Grounds Crew.
Guides greet passengers and serve as ambassadors for Alaskan Native culture; conduct the tour of the Chena Indian Village; serve coffee and donuts and assist Deckhands in the snack bar during busy times. Other duties include assisting passengers with questions. Hours: 30-40 hours per week plus some overtime required.
Qualifications: Ability to speak well before large groups of people; outgoing and cheerful disposition; first-hand knowledge of Alaskan Native culture and communicate well with others.
Deckhands cast off at departure and secure the Riverboat Discovery on landing; maintain the safety and cleanliness of the boat; staff the snack bars when passengers are on board; provide general passenger assistance and if necessary provide emergency first aid until trained EMTs arrive. Hours: 35-40 hours per week plus some overtime required.
Qualifications: Ability to represent the Riverboat Discovery in a courteous, professional manner at all times; mandatory drug testing per the U.S. Coast Guard; applicants over age 21 preferred (Alaska law requires individuals to be 21 to serve alcohol).
Reservationists answer phones; respond to inquiries about the Riverboat Discovery and Gold Dredge 8; and take reservations for both attractions. Reservationists sell and/or collect tickets and perform other duties as directed by the Reservations Manager. Hours: 38-40 hours per week.
Qualifications: Ability to communicate well in person and over the phone; operate office machines accurately and efficiently (computer, calculator, phone and radio systems); and represent the Riverboat Discovery in a courteous, professional manner in order to provide excellent customer service.
Accounting Clerks enter accounts receivable into an accounting program; prepare invoices and journal entries; prepare daily receipts ledgers; post credit card payments to accounts receivable; assist with timekeeping and perform cash counting and reservation support duties. Hours: 36-40 hours a week with the possibility of overtime.
Qualifications: Ability to perform routine and complex accounting duties with a high degree of accuracy; work well independently and as a team. Prior accounting experience and/or classes preferred.
RETAIL SALES ASSOCIATE
Retail Sales Associates serve as a customer service representative for visitors to the Riverboat Discovery; assist visitors with purchases; prepare and stock merchandise for sale; perform inventory control duties; organize and distribute merchandise. Perform other duties related to the successful operation of a retail store including cleaning and moderate lifting. Hours: 36-40 hours per week.
Qualifications: Ability to represent the Riverboat Discovery in a courteous and professional manner in order to provide top-notch customer service; sell merchandise according to sales training, strategies and goals; complete tasks efficiently and accurately according to policies and procedures; operate a PC-based point of sale system (possess computer and mathematical skills) while properly handling cash and making change for customers; communicate and work well with others; perform tasks independently with attention to detail; work in a fast-paced environment that requires you to be “quick on your feet” for eight hours a day; have fun with teammates, managers and other employees!
DINING HALL ASSOCIATE
Dining Hall Associates serve as customer service representatives for visitors to the Riverboat Discovery; provide dining service to guests and meet their needs to ensure a pleasurable dining experience; set up/remove food service items; greet and seat guests in a prompt and courteous manner; reset tables according to service standards; operating commercial dishwashers; ensuring cleanliness of dishes including some polishing of glass for water spot removal; maintain sanitation and safety standards. Hours 36-40

Kitchen Assistants primarily work in our kitchen area with some duties performed in our dining hall. Their duties include operating kitchen cooking equipment to heat fixed menu food; preparing all food for our gift shop café; serving food in the dining hall; maintaining the cleanliness standards required in the kitchen. Hours: 40 hours per week
Qualifications: Ability to represent the Riverboat Discovery in a courteous and professional manner in order to provide top-notch customer service; food preparation knowledge is a must (food service/prep experience preferred); knowledge of cooking terminology and ingredients; ability to follow written recipes; ability to determine when food is done; possess basic arithmetic and portion control knowledge; ability to work in a hot and humid kitchen area; ability to work in a fast paced environment for at least six hours at a time; ability to carry heavy serving dishes and pitchers; have fun while at work.
Donut Maker duties include operate the donut-making machine, clean the donut-making machine and Commissary; ensure that donuts are properly produced, boxed and refrigerated. Hours: 35-40 hours per week
Qualifications: Ability to represent the Riverboat Discovery in a courteous and professional manner in order to provide top-notch customer service; attention to detail; ability to follow instructions and remain focused while performing repetitive duties; ability to work independently and meet production targets; meet a high standard of personal cleanliness.
GROUNDS CREW (full-time and part-time)
Full-time (12:30pm to 9:30pm) and part-time (5:30pm to9:30 pm) Grounds Crew members clean the Riverboat Discovery and premises twice a day (after the boat returns to the dock at 12:30pm and again at 5:30pm). Duties include dusting, vacuuming, emptying trash, washing windows, cleaning restrooms and miscellaneous warehouse/grounds maintenance duties; some off-site maintenance tasks to be performed as directed. Hours: 20-40 hours per week.
General Qualifications: Attention to detail, punctuality, reliability and ability to work independently and on a team.
Wages start at $10.50 per hour.
